Milan qualified by winning the 2006–07 UEFA Champions League, while Sevilla qualified as 2006–07 UEFA Cup winners. Sevilla sought to become only the second club to defend the Super Cup, the first having been Milan itself. The match was nearly cancelled following the death of Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta three days before the fixture.
The match was played on 31 August 2007 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. Sevilla took an early lead through Renato after 14 minutes, but Milan scored three unanswered second-half goals from Filippo Inzaghi, Marek Jankulovski, and UEFA Club Footballer of the Year Kaká to win 3–1. All players wore Puerta's name on their shirts as a tribute.
Milan's victory gave them a record fifth UEFA Super Cup title, surpassing their own previous mark. Sevilla's bid to become back-to-back Super Cup champions was denied. The match was also notable as a tribute to Antonio Puerta, whose death had prompted debate about whether the fixture should proceed at all.
