Formula One had been racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2000, and the 2007 United States Grand Prix was scheduled as the seventh round of that season's world championship. The event attracted considerable attention as McLaren-Mercedes fielded reigning world champion Fernando Alonso alongside rookie Lewis Hamilton.
On June 17, 2007, the 73-lap race was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Lewis Hamilton won ahead of teammate Fernando Alonso, with Felipe Massa completing the podium for Ferrari. The race also marked the Formula One debut of Sebastian Vettel, driving for BMW Sauber, who would go on to become a four-time world champion.
The race proved to be Formula One's last at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The event was removed from the 2008 calendar shortly after, and the sport did not return to the United States until November 2012, when racing resumed at the newly constructed Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
