India was awarded hosting rights for the XIX Commonwealth Games as part of its bid to raise its international sporting profile. Preparations were marred by slow construction, security concerns, and hygiene issues, prompting widespread criticism and threats of boycotts by competing nations in the months before the event.
From 3 to 14 October 2010, 4352 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations competed in 21 sports across 272 events in Delhi. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Australia topped the medal tally with 74 golds and 177 total medals, while India finished second with 38 golds and 101 total medals.
Despite pre-Games controversy, the event proceeded without major incident and was praised by Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell as a success. India achieved its best-ever Commonwealth Games performance, and IOC President Jacques Rogge noted the Games laid a foundation for a potential future Indian Olympic bid.
