Unknown assailants planned a coordinated strike near the Jama Masjid mosque in Old Delhi, planting an explosive device in a parked Maruti 800 car and preparing a motorcycle-based shooting, apparently timed around the influx of foreign visitors ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Two motorcycle-borne gunmen opened fire on a stationary tourist bus carrying a Taiwanese TV crew at 11:24 PM on 19 September 2010, wounding two Taiwanese citizens. Approximately three hours later a car parked 150 metres away caught fire after bomb timers on an explosive device failed, preventing a larger blast.
Both injured tourists, Zeseweiu (27) and Chiang (28), were declared out of danger the following day. The attack intensified public and governmental anxiety over security arrangements for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi, prompting heightened scrutiny of protective measures at public and tourist sites.
