Bayern Munich and Chelsea each won their respective groups and advanced through the knockout rounds, with Bayern defeating Basel, Marseille, and Real Madrid, while Chelsea eliminated Napoli, Benfica, and defending champions Barcelona to set up the final.
Bayern Munich took the lead through Thomas Müller late in the second half, but Didier Drogba equalised for Chelsea five minutes later. After a goalless extra time, in which Arjen Robben missed a penalty, Chelsea won the penalty shoot-out 4–3 to claim their first UEFA Champions League title.
Chelsea became the first London club and fifth English club to win the UEFA Champions League. The victory secured their entry into the following season's Champions League at Tottenham Hotspur's expense. Chelsea subsequently lost the 2012 UEFA Super Cup 4–1 to Atlético Madrid and were beaten 1–0 by Corinthians in the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup final.
