Bayern Munich, the defending champions, were eliminated in the semi-finals of the 2013–14 UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid, meaning Real Madrid qualified for the Club World Cup as European champions and Bayern could not defend the title.
The 2014 FIFA Club World Cup was held in Morocco from 10 to 20 December 2014. Real Madrid defeated Cruz Azul 4–0 in the semi-finals and then beat Argentina's San Lorenzo 2–0 in the final to secure their first Club World Cup title under this format.
The victory gave Real Madrid their first official FIFA Club World Cup title and their fourth world club title overall when counting earlier Intercontinental Cup wins, equalling the record previously held by Italian club Milan.
