Cause

Entering the fourth round of the 2018 Formula One World Championship, Sebastian Vettel held a nine-point lead over Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers' Championship, while Mercedes led Ferrari by a single point in the Constructors' Championship, setting up a closely contested backdrop for the Baku race.

Event

The 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was held on 29 April 2018 at the Baku City Circuit. Charles Leclerc scored points in sixth place, and Brendon Hartley finished tenth, each representing their respective nations' first points in decades. Sergio Pérez claimed third place for Force India.

Consequence

Charles Leclerc became the first Monégasque driver to score a championship point since Louis Chiron in 1950, and Brendon Hartley the first New Zealander since 1976. Pérez's podium finish proved to be the last for the Force India constructor before the team ceased to operate under that name.
