Beijing was selected as host city on July 31, 2015, during the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur. The city had previously hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, and its selection continued a sequence of three consecutive East Asian Games. Planning proceeded amid the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing strict health protocols and closure of most events to the general public.
The XXIV Olympic Winter Games were held from February 4 to 20, 2022, in Beijing, Yanqing District, and Zhangjiakou, China. A record 109 medal events across 15 disciplines were contested by 2,880 athletes from 91 nations. Seven new events debuted, and several venues originally built for the 2008 Summer Olympics were repurposed. The Games were subject to diplomatic boycotts by 10 countries over human rights concerns.
Norway topped the medal table for the third straight Winter Olympics with a record 16 gold medals. Beijing became the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. China recorded its best-ever Winter Olympic performance with 9 gold medals. The Games concluded without major COVID-19 outbreaks, attributed to the strict closed-loop system implemented by Chinese authorities.
