The championships were originally scheduled for Fukuoka in 2021 as the 19th edition, but were postponed twice — first due to the rescheduling of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to 2021 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and then again due to ongoing travel restrictions and safety protocols in Japan.
The 20th World Aquatics Championships took place in Fukuoka, Japan, from 14 to 30 July 2023, featuring 2,392 athletes from 192 member federations. It marked the first edition held under the World Aquatics brand following the renaming of FINA in December 2022, with bans on Russian and Belarusian athletes remaining in force.
As a result of the reshuffling, Budapest stepped in to host the 19th Championships in 2022, and the originally planned 2023 championships in Doha, Qatar, were pushed to 2024. Fukuoka became only the second city to host the event twice, following its 2001 hosting of the 9th edition.
