Unidentified Islamist militants, believed by Jammu and Kashmir Police to be linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba through its offshoot The Resistance Front, targeted a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims in the Reasi district. The attack occurred along a route connecting the Shiv Khori cave shrine to Katra, a known pilgrimage corridor.
On 9 June 2024, gunmen opened fire on the pilgrim bus, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to plunge into a deep gorge. The attackers then continued firing on the crashed bus. Nine pilgrims were killed and 41 others were injured in the assault.
The Resistance Front initially claimed responsibility but subsequently retracted the claim. Jammu and Kashmir Police attributed the attack to Lashkar-e-Taiba. The incident heightened security concerns in the Jammu division and drew renewed attention to militant activity targeting pilgrims in the region.
