The Oceanian qualifying format for the 2002 FIFA World Cup lacked a preliminary round that had existed in 1998 qualifying, allowing teams of vastly different abilities to meet directly. This placed heavily outmatched sides such as American Samoa — missing several eligible players due to eligibility and travel issues — against a full-strength Australia.
On 11 April 2001, Australia defeated American Samoa 31–0 at the International Sports Stadium in Coffs Harbour in an Oceanian qualifying match for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Archie Thompson scored 13 goals, setting a new record for most goals by a single player in an international match, while David Zdrilic added eight goals.
The record-breaking scoreline prompted widespread criticism of the qualifying format from Australian manager Frank Farina and players including Thompson. FIFA subsequently reintroduced a preliminary round in the Oceanian qualifying zone for the 2006 World Cup. Australia's transfer to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006 further addressed the imbalance in competitive standards.
