Badminton had long been a widely played international sport governed by the Badminton World Federation. Following years of demonstration appearances and growing global participation, the International Olympic Committee granted badminton full medal-sport status, leading to its inclusion in the Barcelona Games programme.
Badminton made its Olympic debut at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, held at the Pavelló de la Mar Bella from 28 July to 4 August. Four events were contested in a single-elimination format among 177 athletes from 36 nations. Two bronze medals were awarded per event, as no third-place playoffs were held.
Asian nations dominated the inaugural Olympic badminton competition, claiming 15 of the 16 medals available. Denmark was the sole non-Asian nation to medal, taking a bronze in men's singles. The event established badminton's place in the Olympic programme, where it has remained a fixture with Asian nations continuing to lead.
