On April 2, 1898, Bicolano revolutionary forces under General Vito Belarmino, Simeón Ola, and Glicerio Delgado engaged Spanish colonial troops near Camalig in Albay province. The revolutionaries won a decisive victory, capturing 72 Spanish light infantrymen along with their weapons, marking the first major battle of the revolution on the Bicol mainland.
Following the battle, Spanish forces in Albay province were placed on full alert. Belarmino promoted Ola to the rank of Captain in recognition of his leadership.
