During the War of the Spanish Succession, Austrian-backed forces supporting Archduke Charles VI launched a campaign in the Kingdom of Murcia, a region of Castile, seeking to extend anti-Bourbon control into southeastern Spain, including the strategic port city of Cartagena.
On 21 September 1706, Bourbon troops under commandante Patricio Moran and corporal José Hernández clashed with an English force supported by troops loyal to Charles VI in the El Albujón district near Cartagena. The engagement ended in a clear Bourbon victory.
Combined with the concurrent Bourbon victory at the Battle of Murcia, the outcome at El Albujón led directly to the reconquest of Cartagena and effectively ended the Austrian military campaign in the Kingdom of Murcia, consolidating Bourbon control over the region.
