Empress Matilda's forces had besieged a castle on the edge of Winchester during the civil war known as The Anarchy. Queen Matilda, acting on behalf of her imprisoned husband King Stephen, assembled a relief army with Bishop Henry of Winchester and William of Ypres to counteract the Angevin advance.
Queen Matilda's army arrived at Winchester and blockaded the besieging Angevin forces within the city, cutting them off from supplies. Unable to sustain the siege, the Angevin army attempted to retreat and was crushed. During the rout, Empress Matilda's key commander, Earl Robert of Gloucester, was captured.
Robert of Gloucester's capture gave the royalist side significant leverage. He was exchanged for King Stephen, who was released from imprisonment and restored to the English throne. Despite this reversal, the civil war continued with neither faction achieving a decisive advantage.
