A White Guard battalion from Vyborg was marching toward the White-controlled side of the Karelian Isthmus during the opening days of the Finnish Civil War. Tensions between the White and Red factions had been building throughout January 1918, with minor incidents preceding this engagement.
On 27 January 1918, the White Guard battalion attacked and captured the Kämärä railway station village. They then ambushed a Red train transporting a large cargo of weapons from Saint Petersburg. Despite initial success, the Whites were compelled to withdraw once their ammunition was depleted.
The Battle of Kämärä is regarded as the first battle of the Finnish Civil War. Although minor clashes had occurred earlier in January, this engagement marked the effective beginning of open armed conflict between the White and Red forces in Finland.
