Cause → Event → Consequence
Although the Reform War had formally ended with a Liberal victory and Benito Juárez's entry into Mexico City, conservative forces refused to accept defeat and sought to regroup and rebuild their strength in order to challenge Liberal authority.
On August 8, 1861, at Loma de Jalpa near San Felipe del Obraje in the State of Mexico, elements of the liberal army commanded by General Jesús González Ortega engaged and fought conservative military forces in a pitched battle during the turbulent aftermath of the Reform War.
The liberal forces won the engagement, and the defeated conservative troops were scattered and dispersed at Xalatlaco, further weakening conservative military capacity and reinforcing Liberal dominance in post-Reform War Mexico.
