Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb sought to eliminate the Maratha Kingdom's seat of power by personally leading a campaign toward Satara, the administrative and symbolic center of the Maratha realm, accompanied by 10,000 soldiers.
Between December 1699 and 21 April 1700, Aurangzeb's forces attacked and destroyed major portions of Satara fort. Maratha commander Dhanaji Jadhav, facing overwhelming Mughal pressure, surrendered the fort on 21 April 1700 and withdrew to defend other Maratha strongholds.
The Mughals captured Satara fort and further advanced on other Maratha fortifications. The fall of Satara represented a significant territorial and symbolic loss for the Marathas, weakening their hold over western India during an already difficult period of prolonged Mughal pressure.
