Cause

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada included biathlon as one of its disciplines. Whistler Olympic Park was designated as the competition venue. Years after the Games, retrospective doping tests conducted on stored samples implicated Russian athlete Evgeny Ustyugov, prompting the revocation of his medals in October 2020.

Event

Biathlon competitions were held at Whistler Olympic Park from 13 to 26 February 2010. A notable irregularity occurred in the men's individual event, where two competitors finished in an identical time of 48:32.0, leading to the award of two silver medals and no bronze medal.

Consequence

Ustyugov's disqualification triggered a prolonged legal process. His appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Swiss Federal Tribunal were both rejected by 2025. The IOC Executive Board formally approved the reallocation of his medals to other athletes in September 2025, altering the official results nearly 15 years after the Games.
