Afghan government officials repeatedly requested military reinforcements to defend Zaranj against advancing Taliban forces during the 2021 offensive, but received no response. Only the National Directorate of Security and its forces initially resisted, while broader government and security forces were largely absent or unwilling to fight.
On 6 August 2021, Taliban forces captured Zaranj, the capital of Nimruz Province, meeting minimal resistance. Afghan government officials and security forces either surrendered to the Taliban or fled across the border into Iran or to neighboring Afghan provinces.
The fall of Zaranj marked a turning point in the Taliban's 2021 offensive, demonstrating the vulnerability of Afghan provincial capitals. It was the first such capture since Kunduz in 2016 and signaled the beginning of a cascade of provincial capital seizures across Afghanistan in the weeks that followed.
