Cause

Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, earning the country hosting rights. However, the ongoing Russian invasion made it impossible for Ukraine to stage the event safely, prompting the European Broadcasting Union to select the United Kingdom as the host nation on Ukraine's behalf.

Event

The contest was held at M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on 9, 11, and 13 May 2023, hosted by Alesha Dixon, Hannah Waddingham, Julia Sanina, and Graham Norton. Sweden's Loreen performed "Tattoo," winning the combined jury and televote and becoming only the second artist to win Eurovision twice, after Johnny Logan.

Consequence

Sweden secured a record-tying seventh Eurovision victory, drawing level with Ireland. The broadcast won the British Academy Television Award for Best Live Event, and the contest's online viewership of 15.6 million reflected growing digital engagement. Bulgaria, Montenegro, and North Macedonia's absence highlighted the financial pressures of the global energy crisis on public broadcasters.
