The International Fencing Federation continued its rotation system for team events, first applied at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, which limits the number of team disciplines held at any given Games to four rather than six.
Fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics were held from 6 to 14 August at Carioca Arena 3 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Around 212 fencers competed across ten events — six individual and four team — split equally between men and women.
As a direct result of the rotation system, the men's team sabre and women's team foil events were excluded from the Rio program, meaning athletes in those disciplines had to wait for a future Olympic cycle to compete in their respective team formats.
