The Taliban targeted the popular lakefront resort at Lake Qargha, citing opposition to what they described as foreign-influenced and 'indecent' behavior, including the consumption of alcohol. The attack was framed by the group as a response to perceived moral transgressions at the venue.
Armed Taliban militants stormed the resort shortly before midnight, shooting several guards and seizing 250–300 hostages at gunpoint. A wedding party of around 300 guests sheltered in the lake for hours while a combined force of Afghan National Army troops, ISAF soldiers, and Norwegian special forces from Forsvarets Spesialkommando conducted a rescue operation with air support.
After approximately 12 hours, the siege ended with 21 dead, including 17 civilians inside the resort hotel, one policeman, and several security guards. The attack highlighted the Taliban's capacity to strike civilian leisure venues close to the Afghan capital and underscored ongoing security challenges facing Afghan and coalition forces.
