Ukraine earned the right to host the 2013 Junior Eurovision Song Contest after winning the 2012 edition, making it only the second time in the contest's history that the previous year's winning broadcaster hosted the event. Kyiv was selected as the host city, having previously staged the contest in 2009.
Held on 30 November 2013 at the Palace Ukraine in Kyiv, the contest featured twelve competing nations, with San Marino making their debut. Gaia Cauchi represented Malta with the song 'The Start,' and the event was presented by Timur Miroshnychenko and Zlata Ognevich. A new awards system introduced trophies for the top three finishers.
Malta secured their first victory in any Eurovision competition, and the winning song became the first in Junior Eurovision history sung entirely in English. Ukraine's Sofia Tarasova finished second and Belarus's Ilya Volkov third, each receiving a trophy under the newly introduced awards system.
