Red Bull Racing and Sebastian Vettel entered 2013 as back-to-back champions, having dominated Formula One since 2010. The season marked the final year of the 2.4-litre V8 engine configuration introduced in 2006, with a major regulation change to turbocharged hybrid V6 engines mandated for 2014, creating incentive for teams to maximize performance under the outgoing rules.
Vettel won 13 of 19 Grands Prix across the 2013 season, including nine consecutive victories to close the year, clinching his fourth consecutive World Drivers' Championship with four races to spare. Red Bull Racing simultaneously secured the World Constructors' Championship. Eleven teams and 23 drivers contested the 19-race calendar, with Fernando Alonso finishing second and Mark Webber third before retiring from the sport.
Vettel became only the third driver in Formula One history to win four consecutive World Drivers' Championships, joining Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher. The season closed the V8 engine era and Cosworth's involvement in the sport. From 2014, drivers adopted permanent car numbers, and a new turbocharged hybrid V6 formula came into force, fundamentally reshaping competition.
