Malta was selected as host country for the second time, having previously hosted in 2014. Public Broadcasting Services organised the event under EBU supervision. Several countries withdrew while others, including Poland after an eleven-year absence, returned to the competition, altering the participant lineup from prior years.
The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016 was held on 20 November at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Malta, hosted by Ben Camille and Valerie Vella. Seventeen countries competed, and for the first time in the contest's history, results were determined solely by professional and young jurors rather than including a public televote.
Georgia won the contest with "Mzeo" by Mariam Mamadashvili, becoming the first nation to claim three Junior Eurovision victories. Armenia placed second and Italy third. The elimination of the public televote marked a structural shift in how the contest's results would be determined going forward.
