In April 2011, the International Olympic Committee approved the addition of a mixed team relay event to the luge program, whereby one sled from each of the three traditional events competes per country. This expanded the discipline to four events for the first time in Olympic history.
Luge competitions at the 2014 Winter Olympics were held at the Sliding Center Sanki near Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, from 8 to 13 February 2014. The four events contested were men's singles, women's singles, doubles, and the newly introduced mixed team relay.
In December 2017, the IOC found Russian lugers Albert Demchenko and Tatiana Ivanova guilty of anti-doping violations and stripped Russia of two silver medals. Both athletes appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January 2018 and had their medals reinstated.
