On 9 May 2023, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested from the grounds of the Islamabad High Court. His detention provoked immediate outrage among PTI supporters across the country, who mobilised in large numbers in protest against what they viewed as a politically motivated move.
Nationwide PTI demonstrations rapidly descended into violent riots, with protesters engaging in vandalism, looting, and arson directed at government and military facilities. Attackers targeted sensitive installations, inflicting Rs. 2.5 billion (US$8.9 million) in damage. Law enforcement officers and public buildings were also attacked as the situation escalated into widespread chaos.
The government imposed a cellular and internet blackout and launched a sweeping crackdown against PTI leaders, workers, supporters, and allied media and legal figures. Civilian trials before military courts were initiated, drawing a Supreme Court challenge. The government also accused former ISI director Lt Gen Faiz Hameed of having planned the riots in coordination with Imran Khan.
Political Outcome
