Olympic shooting rules were revised ahead of 1992, replacing the 50 metre running target with the 10 metre running target and introducing new targets across most rifle and pistol events. Yugoslavia's suspension led former Yugoslav athletes to compete as Independent Olympic Participants under the Olympic flag.
Shooting competitions at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics were held at a range complex in Mollet del Vallès across thirteen events. Zhang Shan won gold in the mixed skeet event, becoming the first woman to claim a gold medal in an open-gender Olympic shooting event, while Independent Olympic Participants competed for the first time.
The adoption of new targets produced numerous automatic Olympic records. The mixed skeet format was subsequently closed to women after 1992. Independent Olympic Participants winning medals established a precedent for athletes from suspended nations competing under the Olympic flag in future Games.
