The Quasi-War was an undeclared naval conflict between the United States and France fought primarily in the Caribbean. USS Enterprise, under Lieutenant John Shaw, was on patrol in the region to intercept French vessels preying on American shipping, having already accumulated a record of French prizes.
On October 25, 1800, USS Enterprise engaged the French brig Flambeau off the leeward coast of Dominica. Despite being outgunned by the French vessel, Enterprise prevailed in a short battle and took Flambeau as a prize, marking the last combat between French and American forces in the Quasi-War.
The victory added to John Shaw's reputation as a successful naval commander. Enterprise subsequently captured additional French vessels, including Pauline and Guadaloupeenne. Shaw eventually transferred command to Lieutenant Andrew Sterett due to illness, and Sterett continued operations before returning home, effectively closing the Quasi-War's naval campaign.
