NJPW had maintained a working relationship with American promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) for several years, which had brought TNA wrestlers to previous Wrestle Kingdom events. That relationship concluded prior to 2012, removing TNA participation from the card.
Wrestle Kingdom VI took place on January 4, 2012 at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling. The event featured twelve matches, three contested for championships, and included outside participants from AJPW, CMLL, and Pro Wrestling Noah.
The event marked the end of Roman numeral suffixes for the Wrestle Kingdom series and confirmed the conclusion of the NJPW–TNA working arrangement. TNA wrestlers did not appear at a Wrestle Kingdom event for the first time in five years, reshaping NJPW's international partnerships going forward.
