Biography

Abdelsalam Atalla al-Majali, born on 18 February 1925 in Al-Karak, Jordan, became a key political figure in modern Jordan. He studied medicine at Damascus University and furthered his surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, building a career as a respected physician before entering politics. His expertise in both medicine and governance shaped his career and public service.

Al-Majali served as Jordan's Prime Minister twice, from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 1998. During his first term, he was instrumental in negotiating and implementing Jordan's peace treaty with Israel in 1994, working with King Hussein to establish diplomatic relations. This marked a major shift in Middle Eastern politics and highlighted his skill in diplomacy.

Throughout his career, al-Majali continued practicing medicine and helped improve Jordan's healthcare system. His background as a surgeon influenced his careful approach to policy-making and negotiation. He was known for his pragmatic leadership and his ability to handle the complex politics of the Middle East during a time of significant regional change.

He received numerous honors, including the Supreme Order of the Renaissance, the Order of the Star of Jordan, and the Order of Independence from Jordan. Internationally, he was awarded the Order of Isabella the Catholic and its Grand Cross in 1994, and the Order of Orange-Nassau from the Netherlands that same year. Al-Majali passed away on 3 January 2023 at the King Hussein Medical Center, ending a lifetime of public service and medical practice that nearly spanned a century.

Before Fame

Al-Majali grew up in Al-Karak during the British Mandate period and the early years after Jordan gained independence in 1946. The 1940s and 1950s were crucial for the young nation, as Jordan built its institutions and sought stability in a turbulent region. Due to limited higher education opportunities in Jordan at the time, he pursued medical education at Damascus University, like many ambitious students who went to neighboring Arab countries or Europe for advanced training.

Moving from medicine to politics was common in the developing Middle Eastern states of the mid-20th century, where educated professionals were often asked to take up government roles. Al-Majali's surgical training in Edinburgh gave him international exposure and professional credibility, which helped him later in diplomatic negotiations. He entered politics while Jordan was working on modernizing its institutions and establishing itself as a moderate voice in Arab politics.
