Biography

Bidzina Ivanishvili, born February 18, 1956, in Chorvila, Georgia, is a Georgian-French billionaire businessman and politician who has played a major role in Georgian politics since 2012. Also known by his Russian name Boris Grigoryevich Ivanishvili, he made his fortune during the privatization period after the Soviet Union collapsed, becoming the richest person in Georgia with assets estimated at $7.6 billion in 2024, nearly 25% of the country's GDP. He built his business empire by buying undervalued Russian banking and metals assets during the 1990s economic changes.

After studying at Tbilisi State University and the Russian University of Transport, Ivanishvili started out in the technology sector, selling computers in Russia before moving into banking and metallurgy. His timing was spot on as he took advantage of privatization programs under Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin. By 2002, after amassing significant wealth, he moved to France, became a French citizen, and stepped away from the increasingly restrictive Russian business climate.

Ivanishvili's entry into Georgian politics in 2012 brought major changes. He founded the Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party and successfully went up against the United National Movement led by President Mikheil Saakashvili. His win led to his role as Prime Minister from October 2012 to November 2013, during which he made major policy changes. Although he claimed to step back from active politics after his short time as Prime Minister, international observers and local critics often describe him as the real decision-maker in Georgia, working behind the scenes to influence government policy.

Since 2024, Ivanishvili has faced international sanctions from the United States and several European Union countries, accused of harming Georgian democracy and promoting Russian interests. His political career has involved repeated claims of leaving public life, accompanied by occasional returns to leadership roles. After formally stepping down in 2013, he took back control as party chairman in 2018, announced another withdrawal in 2021, and returned as honorary chairman in late 2023. His marriage to Ekaterina Khvedelidze has provided personal stability, while his political influence continues to impact Georgia's path between European and Russian influences.

Before Fame

Growing up in the small village of Chorvila during the Soviet era, Ivanishvili saw both the limits and possibilities of life in Soviet Georgia. He went to Tbilisi State University and the Russian University of Transport, gaining technical knowledge that would be useful in his early business ventures. The Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 opened up new opportunities for entrepreneurs who could navigate the uncertain move to capitalism.

In the 1990s, privatization in Russia created huge opportunities to build wealth for those with capital, connections, and a willingness to take risks. Ivanishvili found a strategic spot in this environment, starting with computer sales before spotting undervalued state assets in banking and metallurgy. His success during this time was due to both his personal skills and the broader economic changes happening across the former Soviet area, where state enterprises were often sold to private owners for less than market value.
