Bidzina Ivanishvili, born February 18, 1956, in Chorvila, Georgia, is a Georgian-French billionaire businessman and politician who has played a major role in Georgian politics since 2012. Also known by his Russian name Boris Grigoryevich Ivanishvili, he made his fortune during the privatization period after the Soviet Union collapsed, becoming the richest person in Georgia with assets estimated at $7.6 billion in 2024, nearly 25% of the country's GDP. He built his business empire by buying undervalued Russian banking and metals assets during the 1990s economic changes.
After studying at Tbilisi State University and the Russian University of Transport, Ivanishvili started out in the technology sector, selling computers in Russia before moving into banking and metallurgy. His timing was spot on as he took advantage of privatization programs under Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin.
