Biography
Abdulla Nigmatovich Aripov was born on May 24, 1961, in Tashkent, the capital of what was then the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. He went to Tashkent University of Information Technologies, where he learned about engineering and information systems. This technical knowledge set him apart in Uzbekistan's political scene, helping him focus on bringing in modern technology and digital development in the government.
Aripov started moving up in government after Uzbekistan became independent in 1991. He joined the Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party, one of the officially recognized political parties in the country. His skills in administration got him the position of deputy prime minister from 2002 to 2012, where he spent ten years handling major executive tasks. During this time, he worked in various government roles across many areas of the Uzbek government.
After a short return to being deputy prime minister in 2016, Aripov was named Prime Minister by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in December of that year. He was the fourth person to take on this role since Uzbekistan's independence. His appointment happened during a time of reform under Mirziyoyev, who became president after the death of Islam Karimov. Aripov's tech skills matched the government's goals to boost the digital economy, better public services through technology, and draw in foreign investment.
As prime minister, Aripov has managed programs aimed at opening up parts of Uzbekistan's economy and improving its rankings in global business. His administration has worked on infrastructure development, agricultural reform, and growing the information and communication technology sectors. He has represented Uzbekistan at many diplomatic events and worked with President Mirziyoyev to improve relationships with neighboring Central Asian countries and global partners.
For his work for the country, Aripov has received several honors, including the Order of Friendship, the Mehnat Shuhrati order, the Order of Ismoili Somoni, and the Dostyk Order of grade II, the latter being a Kazakhstani award showing strong regional ties. He has remained prime minister up to the present, making him one of the longest-serving in that role in Uzbekistan since its independence.
Before Fame
Abdulla Aripov grew up in Tashkent during the Soviet era when Uzbekistan was a part of the USSR, following the central planning and ideological priorities set in Moscow. He studied at the Tashkent University of Information Technologies, which focused on engineering and computing. Graduating in a field that was becoming globally important, Aripov was part of a generation of technically trained professionals who would later take on significant roles in Uzbekistan's state structures after independence.
After Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991, the country needed administrators to manage complex governmental tasks as it moved away from Soviet governance. Aripov's technical background and organizational skills made him well-suited for this environment. His gradual rise through ministerial roles in the 1990s and 2000s built the credibility and connections that eventually led to his appointment to the country's highest executive administrative office.
