Biography

Abhiman Singh Basnyat (1744-1800) was a notable military commander and statesman who became the first Commander-in-Chief of unified Nepal. Born in the Gorkha Kingdom during a time of expansion, he became one of Nepal's most influential military leaders. After General Kalu Pande's death during the failed siege of Kirtipur, Basnyat was promoted to the top military position, starting his role in Nepal's unification campaigns. His military career featured successful territorial conquests and key leadership during major conflicts that defined modern Nepal's boundaries.

Basnyat was instrumental in unifying Nepal under the Shah dynasty, taking part in the invasion of Makawanpur and leading the annexation of the Tanahun Kingdom. He further showed his military prowess during the Sino-Nepalese War, serving under Chautariya Shree Krishna Shah. This conflict was a test for Nepal's military against Chinese forces and confirmed Basnyat's skill as a battlefield commander. His strategic thinking and leadership made him a vital part of Nepal's expansion.

Besides his military success, Basnyat was Mul (Chief) Kaji, making him a powerful political figure in Nepal. However, his career hit a roadblock in 1794 when King Rana Bahadur Shah dissolved the government to strengthen his power, appointing Kirtiman as Chief Kaji in Basnyat's place. Despite the setback, Basnyat continued to serve in various roles.

In 1857 B.S. (1800 AD), Basnyat was assigned to the Kirata regions, including Pallo Kirant Limbuwan, Majh Kirant Khambuwan, and Wallo Kirant, known as Kaala Banzaar. This assignment was considered unsuitable for his age and previous high rank, marking a significant drop from his former prominent roles. Being sent to these distant eastern areas at fifty-six was seen as unfair treatment of an experienced commander and former Mulkaji. Sadly, Basnyat died during this assignment, reportedly from fever, likely malaria, while serving in these difficult frontier areas.

Before Fame

Born in 1744 in the Gorkha Kingdom, Abhiman Singh Basnyat grew up during a transformative time in Nepal's history, when the small hill state was starting its ambitious expansion under Prithvi Narayan Shah. Although the Gorkha Kingdom was small, it had a strong military tradition and a strategic vision for uniting the fragmented principalities of the Himalayan region. Basnyat would have been immersed in a culture where military service and territorial expansion were highly valued, preparing him for his future military career.

Rising to military prominence in 18th-century Nepal required both fighting skills and political savvy. The kingdom's expansion efforts needed leaders who could handle complex sieges, diplomatic talks, and integrating conquered territories. When General Kalu Pande died during the second siege of Kirtipur, it created an opportunity for capable commanders like Basnyat to rise to top military positions, showing the dynamic and merit-based aspects of Gorkha military leadership during this period of rapid territorial growth.
