Biography

Agneta Åse "Agnetha" Fältskog was born on April 5, 1950, in Jönköping, Sweden. She began her musical career as a teenager, releasing her self-titled debut album in 1968 at age 18, which achieved success in Sweden and established her as a promising young artist in the Swedish music scene. Her early work encompassed traditional Swedish schlager music and pop ballads, showcasing her distinctive soprano voice that would later become internationally recognized.

In 1972, Fältskog married musician Björn Ulvaeus, and together with Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, they formed the group ABBA. The quartet achieved breakthrough success in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo," launching them to international stardom. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, ABBA became one of the world's most successful pop groups, with Fältskog serving as one of the primary vocalists alongside Lyngstad. Her voice featured prominently on many of ABBA's biggest hits, including "SOS," "Fernando," and "The Winner Takes It All."

Following ABBA's unofficial dissolution in December 1982, Fältskog pursued a solo career, releasing several albums in the 1980s including "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" and "I Stand Alone." She also took on acting roles, most notably starring in the Swedish film "Raskenstam." However, by the 1990s, she had largely withdrawn from public life, choosing to live quietly on the island of Ekerö in Stockholm County and avoiding media attention for over a decade.

After a 16-year hiatus from recording, Fältskog returned to music in 2004 with the album "My Colouring Book," followed by "A" in 2013, which became her most successful solo album in the UK charts. She reunited with her former ABBA bandmates from 2016 to 2022, culminating in the release of their ninth studio album "Voyage" and the launch of the ABBA Voyage digital concert residency in London. In 2024, she was honored with the Commander 1st class of the Order of Vasa, recognizing her contributions to Swedish culture and music.

Before Fame

Fältskog grew up in post-war Sweden during a period of significant social and economic transformation. The 1960s Swedish music scene was heavily influenced by both traditional schlager music and the emerging international pop trends from Britain and America. As a teenager with natural musical talent, she began writing songs and performing locally, eventually catching the attention of record producers.

Her path to fame began when she sent a demo tape to the Swedish record label Cupol Records, leading to her first recording contract at age 17. This was during an era when Swedish artists were beginning to gain recognition beyond Scandinavian borders, setting the stage for what would later become known as the Swedish pop music export phenomenon.
