Agostino Ramelli (1531–1600) was an Italian engineer and inventor who made important contributions to mechanical engineering during the Renaissance. Born in Ponte Tresa, a town on the Italy-Switzerland border, Ramelli became one of the most creative engineers of his time. Ramelli is best known for his book "Le diverse et artificiose machine del Capitano Agostino Ramelli" (The Various and Ingenious Machines of Captain Agostino Ramelli), published in 1588. This important work contained detailed illustrations and descriptions of 195 mechanical devices, including water pumps, mills, military siege engines, and architectural machinery. It showed his deep understanding of mechanical principles and his skill in visualizing complex engineering solutions. One of his most famous inventions was the bookwheel, a rotating reading desk that let scholars access multiple open books at once without losing their place.

Throughout his career, Ramelli worked in various military roles, earning the title of Captain. His engineering skills were valued in both civilian and military settings, as he designed fortifications, hydraulic systems, and mechanical devices for warfare. His military experience influenced many of his mechanical innovations, especially in siege warfare and defensive engineering.
