Biography

Miguel Juan Sebastián Piñera Echenique was born on December 1, 1949, in Santiago, Chile, to a politically active family. His father was a Christian Democratic politician and diplomat, giving him early exposure to public service and international affairs. Piñera studied business administration at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, then went on to Harvard University, where he earned a degree in economics with a Fulbright Scholarship. This strong academic background helped him succeed as both an entrepreneur and a politician.

Piñera made his fortune through strategic investments and credit card businesses, becoming one of Chile's wealthiest people with an estimated net worth of US$2.7 billion at the time of his death. His business skills spanned several sectors, making him a key figure in Chilean commerce. In 1990, he entered politics with the liberal-conservative National Renewal party, serving as a senator for the East Santiago district until 1998. He was elected president for two terms, first from 2010 to 2014, and again from 2018 to 2022, making him the 34th and 36th president of Chile.

As president, Piñera faced many challenges and had notable successes. His first term included dealing with the devastating 2010 Chile earthquake and the highly-praised rescue of 33 trapped miners that same year. In his second term, he led Chile's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and legalized same-sex marriage in 2021-2022. However, both terms were marked by major protests, including the 2011 student protests and the much larger 2019-2020 demonstrations, the biggest since Chile returned to democracy.

Piñera was Chile's first democratically elected conservative president since 1958 and the first since Augusto Pinochet left office in 1990. After leaving office in 2022, he unexpectedly formed a positive relationship with his successor, left-wing president Gabriel Boric, who had been a strong critic. Piñera died in a helicopter crash on Lake Ranco on February 6, 2024, at the age of 74. His political influence continues through a center-right and right-wing group known as Piñerism.

Before Fame

Growing up in a politically involved household, Piñera got a taste of public service and diplomacy through his father's work in the Christian Democratic Party. This environment sparked his interest in economics and governance, leading him to pursue advanced studies in business administration and economics. His academic achievements earned him a Fulbright Scholarship to Harvard University, where he honed the analytical skills that would later drive his success in business.

Before entering politics, Piñera made a name for himself as a successful entrepreneur and investor, especially in the financial services sector through credit card businesses and strategic investments. His business achievements aligned with Chile's economic liberalization after the end of military rule, putting him in a unique position to connect commerce and democratic governance when he entered the Senate in 1990.
