Biography

Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky was born on February 17, 1929, in Iquique, Chile, and became known as one of cinema's most unconventional and provocative artists. He has worked in many areas, including filmmaking, comics, theater, and spiritual philosophy. After attending the University of Chile, Jodorowsky left traditional studies behind to dive into experimental theater and mime. In 1947, he founded Teatro Mimico, starting his journey into avant-garde art that would shape his later work.

Jodorowsky's artistic journey took off when he moved to Paris in the early 1950s to study mime under acclaimed teacher Étienne Decroux. This training in physical expression deeply influenced his later filmmaking style. From 1960, he lived between Mexico City and Paris, helping to start the Panic Movement, a radical surrealist group known for shocking and violent performances that aimed to shake up audiences and question social norms.

He began in cinema with experimental films, but he found success with El Topo (1970), an acid western that became popular as the first midnight cult hit and caught the eye of John Lennon. Lennon's interest led former Beatles manager Allen Klein to fund Jodorowsky's next film, The Holy Mountain (1973), a surreal take on Western esoteric traditions. Although both films were critically acclaimed in underground circles, disputes with Klein over distribution limited their wider release, though they are still legendary in cult cinema.

In addition to films, Jodorowsky became well-known in comics, especially through his work with French artist Moebius on The Incal series. His comic creations, like The Saga of The Meta-Barons, show his knack for bringing his surrealist ideas into comic form. Throughout his career, he has also worked as a tarot reader, spiritual advisor, and has written many books on mysticism and psychomagic, his own therapeutic practice. His diverse work has brought him several international awards, including the Yellow Kid Award, Officer of Arts and Letters, and the Pablo Neruda Order of Artistic and Cultural Merit.

Before Fame

Growing up in Iquique, Chile, during the 1930s and 1940s, Jodorowsky felt the isolation of living in a far-off port city, which may have sparked his later interest in unusual artistic expression. He got into theater and performance art during his university years but eventually chose hands-on artistic experimentation over formal academic studies.

After World War II, there was a renewed interest in European avant-garde movements, offering plenty of inspiration for his artistic growth. When he decided to study mime in Paris, he found himself in the middle of an experimental theater revival. At the same time, the counterculture movement of the 1960s created audiences eager for his bold artistic ideas.
