Biography

Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens (26 June 1908 – 11 September 1973) was a Chilean doctor and socialist politician who was the 29th President of Chile from 1970 until he died in 1973. Born in Valparaíso to a middle-class family, Allende became the first Marxist to be elected president in a liberal democracy in Latin America. Over nearly four decades, he held various positions like senator, deputy, and cabinet minister, staying true to his socialist and democratic beliefs.

Allende's journey to the presidency was characterized by persistence and gradual political growth. After studying medicine at the University of Chile, he co-founded the Socialist Party of Chile in 1933 and started a long career in public service. He ran for president three times without success before winning in 1970, with attempts in 1952, 1958, and 1964. He finally won as the candidate of the Popular Unity coalition, a left-wing group that narrowly defeated conservative and centrist rivals in a tight three-way race.

As president, Allende pursued what he called "The Chilean Path to Socialism," aiming for major economic and social changes while keeping democracy intact. His administration took control of key industries like copper mines, banks, and large estates, and expanded education and healthcare programs. These efforts sought to reduce inequality and boost living standards for workers, but also faced strong opposition from business leaders, the middle class, and foreign interests, notably the United States.

Allende's presidency dealt with growing challenges such as economic instability, political division, and outside pressure. His government often clashed with the opposition-led Congress and judiciary, and faced strikes, shortages, and hyperinflation. The situation worsened due to secret CIA operations aimed at destabilizing his leadership. On 11 September 1973, Chilean military forces led by General Augusto Pinochet staged a coup that ended Allende's government and his life, as he died during the attack on La Moneda Palace in Santiago.

Before Fame

Allende was born in Valparaíso into a politically active family with his father working as a lawyer and notary public. He started his education at Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera and then went on to study medicine at the University of Chile, specializing in surgery while developing a political awareness. During his time at university, he got involved in student politics and was drawn to Marxist ideas, joining protests against Carlos Ibáñez del Campo's government.

After earning his medical degree in 1932, Allende briefly practiced medicine while also starting his political career. He helped start the Socialist Party of Chile in 1933 and was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1937 at the age of 29. His early political work included serving as Minister of Health under President Pedro Aguirre Cerda from 1939 to 1942, where he pushed for public health reforms and social welfare programs that would later shape his policies as president.
