Biography

Ioanna "Nana" Mouskouri was born on October 13, 1934, in Chania, Greece. She studied at the Athens Conservatoire, where she built her musical skills. She started her international career in the late 1950s and early 1960s by recording in various languages. Her big break came with "The White Rose of Athens," first recorded in German as "Weiße Rosen aus Athen." This became her first record to sell a million copies and made her a major European artist.

Mouskouri's ability to sing in many languages became a hallmark of her career. She recorded about 450 albums in at least thirteen languages, including Greek, French, English, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Hebrew, Welsh, Mandarin Chinese, and Corsican. In 1963, she represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with "À force de prier," placing eighth. Her work with composer Michel Legrand led to her recording the theme for the film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." From 1968 to 1976, she hosted her own BBC TV show, "Presenting Nana Mouskouri," which greatly boosted her global fame.

Her trademark black-rimmed glasses became a notable feature, setting her apart from other artists at the time. Some of her most popular songs include "Je chante avec toi Liberté" (1981), sung in at least five languages, and "Only Love" (1984), the theme song for the TV series "Mistral's Daughter." The latter was her only UK hit single, reaching number two in February 1986, and was recorded in several languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, and German.

Beyond music, Mouskouri became a UNICEF spokesperson in 1993. She also went into politics, serving as a Greek deputy in the European Parliament from 1994 to 1999. She was married twice, first to Georgios Petsilas and later to André Chapelle. She received numerous awards, such as being named Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2007, later promoted to Commander in 2019, Officer of the National Order of Quebec in 2013, and honorary doctorates from places like McGill University.

Before Fame

Growing up in Chania during the 1930s and 1940s, Mouskouri lived through World War II and the German occupation of Greece. Her musical training at the Athens Conservatoire gave her a classical background that later influenced her singing skills and adaptability. After the war, the European entertainment industry was changing a lot, with new recording technologies and TV broadcasting creating chances for artists who could reach international audiences.

The 1950s European music scene became more connected, with artists crossing national borders more often. Mouskouri's ability to sing in multiple languages put her in a good position as European countries embraced cultural exchange and shared entertainment. Her early recordings took advantage of the growing demand for refined popular music that could cross language barriers, paving the way for her international success.
