Biography
Alexander Siddig, born Siddig el-Fadil on 21 November 1965 in Omdurman, Sudan, is a British-Sudanese actor and director with a varied career in TV, film, and theater for over 30 years. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after attending St Lawrence College, which gave him a classical foundation for his work in different genres and international projects. He chose the name Alexander Siddig early in his career to make it easier for Western audiences, though his birth name shows his Sudanese heritage and family background.
Siddig became widely known for playing Dr. Julian Bashir in the science fiction series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which aired from 1993 to 1999. The character, a talented and sometimes overconfident Starfleet doctor on a space station near Bajor, allowed Siddig to show significant range, especially as the series delved into complex issues like genetic engineering and moral dilemmas. His seven-season performance made him a key part of the Star Trek franchise and earned him a dedicated fan base worldwide.
After Deep Space Nine, Siddig took on roles that showed his interest in politically and morally challenging material. He appeared in Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed film Syriana in 2005, playing Prince Nasir Al-Subaai with George Clooney and Matt Damon. He was also in Ridley Scott's Hannibal Rising in 2006 and the Canadian drama Cairo Time in 2009. On American TV, he played former terrorist Hamri Al-Assad in the sixth season of the series 24, gaining a large mainstream audience. He also appeared as Philip Burton in the British sci-fi series Primeval.
Siddig connected with a new generation of viewers as Prince Doran Martell in HBO's Game of Thrones, mainly during the show's fifth season. He later played Ra's al Ghul, a well-known villain in DC Comics, in the Fox series Gotham. These major TV roles reinforced his reputation as a versatile actor capable of making a strong impression in big international projects. Outside of genre entertainment, he's continued to work in independent films and literary adaptations, including stage performances in the UK.
While working on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Siddig was married to his co-star Nana Visitor, who played Commander Kira Nerys. They had a son together before divorcing. His family is notable too, as he is the nephew of Sudanese politician and statesman Sadiq al-Mahdi, former Prime Minister of Sudan, and is related on his mother's side to a prominent family with deep roots in Sudanese political and religious history.
Before Fame
Born in Omdurman, Sudan, Alexander Siddig spent parts of his early life between Africa and Britain, shaping his cultural perspective and later enhancing his ability to convincingly portray characters from various national and ethnic backgrounds. He attended St Lawrence College in Kent, England, where he received a standard British secondary education before deciding to pursue acting. His choice to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art placed him in one of the UK's top training schools, with many graduates going on to successful careers in theatre and film.
In the early 1990s, television production saw a big increase, especially with the rise of cable and syndicated shows in the United States. It was during this time that Siddig auditioned for and secured the role of Dr. Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
