Biography
Nouhad Wadie Haddad, better known as Fairuz, was born on November 21, 1935, in Zuqaq al-Blat, Beirut. She became one of the most celebrated singers in the Arab world, earning titles like 'The Bird of the East,' 'The Cedar of Lebanon,' and 'Our Ambassador to the Stars.' Her musical career began in the late 1940s as a teenager when she joined the choir at Lebanon's national radio station. This was the start of a legendary six-decade career that changed Arabic music.
Fairuz's big break came in 1952 with her hit song 'Itab,' making her an instant star across the Arab world. Her fame grew quickly throughout the 1950s and 1960s, leading to performances in major Arab cities like Damascus, Amman, Cairo, Rabat, Algiers, and Tunis. In 1957, she reached a significant milestone by performing at the Baalbeck International Festival, where Lebanese President Camille Chamoun awarded her the 'Cavalier' medal, Lebanon's highest honor for artistic achievement.
During her career, Fairuz married composer Assi Rahbani, forming a personal and professional partnership that greatly influenced her music. She gained international recognition with performances at top venues worldwide, including Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, the Olympia and Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. Her appeal around the world led to a performance at the United Nations General Assembly Lobby, showing her role as a cultural ambassador.
Fairuz has released nearly 1,500 recorded songs, over 80 albums, and has starred in 20 musicals. She has sold over 150 million records globally, making her one of the top-selling Middle Eastern artists and one of the best-selling music artists worldwide. Her contributions to music and culture have been acknowledged with many international honors, including the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres from France in 1988, the Grand Cordon of the National Order of the Cedar, the titles of Commander and Knight of the Legion of Honour, and an honorary doctorate from the American University of Beirut.
Before Fame
Fairuz was born into a modest family in Zuqaq al-Blat, a neighborhood in Beirut. Her early musical talent led her to the Lebanese national radio station as a teenager in the late 1940s. Starting as a chorus member, she developed her unique vocal style during Lebanon's cultural revival after gaining independence, when the country was becoming a center for Arabic arts and literature.
The late 1940s and early 1950s were a golden age for Arabic music. Radio broadcasting was expanding across the Middle East, offering artists new opportunities to reach wider audiences. Fairuz's arrival on the scene happened as Lebanon was becoming a cultural hub, where traditional Arabic music was being updated, and complex arrangements were gaining popularity among educated city audiences.
