Biography

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, often called AMLO, was born on November 13, 1953, in Tepetitán, a small town in the municipality of Macuspana in Tabasco, Mexico. He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he earned a degree in political science but paused his studies to get involved in politics early on. This early break hinted at his lifelong dedication to public service and political activism.

López Obrador began his political career in 1976 with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which had led Mexican politics for years. His first major role was as director of the Indigenous Institute of Tabasco, where he worked to promote the use of books written in indigenous languages. This showed his care for marginalized communities and cultural preservation. In 1989, he made a big change by joining the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a leftist party challenging the PRI's long time power.

As part of the PRD, López Obrador quickly advanced, running for Governor of Tabasco in 1994 and becoming the party's national leader from 1996 to 1999. His key role before presidency was in 2000 when he was elected Head of Government of Mexico City. He served until 2005, focusing on reducing crime, improving infrastructure, and expanding social programs. These efforts gained him a strong following in Mexico City and solidified his standing as a leader of the Mexican left.

López Obrador ran for president three times. His first run in 2006, as the candidate for the Coalition for the Good of All, ended in a close loss to Felipe Calderón of the National Action Party (PAN). The disputed results led to widespread protests and exposed deep divisions in Mexican society. After founding the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) in 2011, he ran again in 2012 without success. He finally won the presidency in 2018, becoming the 65th President of Mexico, serving from 2018 to 2024. His time in office focused on populist policies and a strong anti-corruption stance aimed at changing Mexican politics and governance.

Before Fame

Growing up in rural Tabasco during the 1950s and 1960s, López Obrador saw the economic gaps and social inequalities that later influenced his political beliefs. During his youth, Mexico was experiencing the 'Mexican Miracle,' a time of steady economic growth, but this prosperity didn't reach many rural areas like his hometown. He chose to pause his university studies to get involved in political activities, reflecting the turbulent political climate of 1970s Mexico, a time when student movements and social activism were on the rise.

López Obrador's rise to political prominence was influenced by Mexico's slow move toward democratization in the late 20th century. His early work with indigenous communities in Tabasco and his switch from the ruling PRI to the opposition PRD mirrored the broader political shift in Mexico as the country moved away from single-party rule to a more competitive democratic system.
