Biography

Andrew Michael Holness was born on 22 July 1972 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and is the first Jamaican prime minister born after the country gained independence from Britain in 1962. He studied at the University of the West Indies, where he later earned a doctorate while serving as prime minister, becoming the first sitting head of government to do so. He is married to Juliet Holness, who is also active in Jamaican public life.

Holness moved up through the Jamaica Labour Party and started his national political career at a young age. He took over from Bruce Golding as Prime Minister in October 2011 at age 39, making him the youngest person to hold that office in Jamaica. His first term was short, as he called an election for 29 December 2011 to gain his own electoral mandate. However, the People's National Party, led by Portia Simpson-Miller, won with 42 seats to the JLP's 21. Holness then became Leader of the Opposition in January 2012.

In March 2016, Holness led the Jamaica Labour Party back into power, becoming the youngest person elected as Prime Minister at age 43. This time he had a mandate from the election, not just from succession. He has led Jamaica through challenges, including improving infrastructure, reducing crime, and dealing with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the September 2020 general election, the Jamaica Labour Party won by a large margin, and Holness was sworn in again as prime minister on 7 September 2020. This victory made him the longest-serving prime minister from the Jamaica Labour Party. During his time in office, he has received several honors, such as the Order of the Nation, Jamaica's second-highest honor, and the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella, from the Dominican Republic.

Before Fame

Andrew Holness grew up in Spanish Town, the former capital of Jamaica, during a time of political and social upheaval. The 1970s and 1980s in Jamaica were defined by fierce rivalry between the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party, economic struggles, and social disorder. It was in this environment that Holness became interested in public affairs and community service.

He attended the University of the West Indies, where he built both an educational foundation and political connections that helped his career. Holness entered politics through the Jamaica Labour Party, showing organizational skill and appealing to younger voters. His steady rise in the party eventually led him to become the party leader and, for the first time in 2011, the Prime Minister.
