Biography
Óscar Arístides de la Renta y Fiallo was born on July 22, 1932, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He showed talent in art and drawing early on and went to Spain to study painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. While in Spain, he shifted his focus from painting to fashion, training under the legendary Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the most influential fashion designers of the twentieth century. This experience provided de la Renta with a strong foundation in high fashion.
After working with Balenciaga, de la Renta moved to Paris and became an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin. In 1963, he moved to New York City and joined Elizabeth Arden, designing her ready-to-wear collection. He launched his own fashion brand in 1965, which became a well-known luxury name worldwide. The house was based on Madison Avenue in Manhattan and eventually expanded to have boutiques across several continents.
De la Renta gained international attention in the 1960s by dressing Jacqueline Kennedy, then the First Lady of the United States. His designs were known for their elegance, femininity, and a blend of European couture and American sensibility. Over the years, he dressed many First Ladies, including Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama, along with numerous celebrities and socialites. His role as the head designer for Balmain from 1993 to 2002 earned him further international acclaim and made him the first American to lead a French couture house.
Personally, de la Renta was married twice. His first wife was Françoise de Langlade, the editor of French Vogue, who introduced him to high society in Paris and New York. After her death in 1983, he married Annette Engelhard, known as Annette de la Renta, and they stayed together until his passing. He was also known for his charitable work, particularly his commitment to the Dominican Republic, where he established a school and social programs.
Óscar de la Renta passed away on October 20, 2014, in Kent, Connecticut, after battling cancer. He was 82. Throughout his career, he received many awards, including the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989, the Great Immigrants Award in 2006, and the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit from Spain in 2011. He left behind a fashion house that continues to thrive and a legacy that shaped American luxury fashion for over fifty years.
Before Fame
Óscar de la Renta grew up in Santo Domingo during Rafael Trujillo's authoritarian rule in the Dominican Republic. Drawn to art as a young man, he went to Spain in the early 1950s to study painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. While in Spain, he decided to move into fashion, landing an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose Madrid studio was known for its technical demands in couture.
Transitioning from painting student to fashion apprentice wasn't unusual in mid-twentieth century Europe, where the line between fine art and design was often blurry. Working with Balenciaga exposed de la Renta to top-notch construction and design, and his later work with Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin in Paris gave him a deeper understanding of French couture. By the time he arrived in New York in the early 1960s, he brought with him a unique blend of European training and a fresh perspective eager to make an impact on American fashion.
