Biography

Anil Surinder Kapoor was born on December 24, 1956, in Mumbai, India, to film producer Surinder Kapoor. He went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and later studied at Mithibai College. Growing up in a film family gave Kapoor early exposure to the entertainment industry, eventually shaping his career. He married Sunita Kapoor, and their family became one of Bollywood's most notable entertainment dynasties.

Kapoor started his acting career with a small role in the romance film Hamare Tumhare in 1979. He made his starring debut in the Telugu film Vamsa Vruksham in 1980 and the Kannada film Pallavi Anupallavi in 1983. His big break came with Woh 7 Din in 1984 and Meri Jung in 1985, establishing him as a leading actor in Hindi cinema. During the 1980s and 1990s, he starred in successful films like Saaheb, Karma, the iconic Mr. India, Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Beta, Virasat, and Taal, solidifying his reputation as one of Bollywood's most versatile actors.

The early 2000s were challenging for Kapoor as a lead actor, with several commercial flops. However, he reinvented himself with multi-starrer hits like No Entry in 2005 and Welcome in 2007. This time also saw him taking on more character-driven and supporting roles in films such as Race, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Animal, showing his flexibility as an actor.

Kapoor's career reached international heights with his role in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, earning him global fame. He later appeared in the American TV series 24 and had a role in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2011. In Indian television, he starred in adaptations of international series such as 24 and The Night Manager, showing his ability to work across different platforms.

Over his four-decade career, Kapoor has appeared in more than 100 films and won numerous awards, including two National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards. Since 2005, he has also been involved in film production, extending his contributions beyond acting. His work has made him one of the most recognizable Bollywood stars both in India and internationally.
