Biography
Hamid Karzai was born on December 24, 1957, in Karz, Afghanistan, into the Popalzai Pashtun tribe. He went to Habibia High School in Kabul and later studied abroad, earning a master's degree from Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, India, in the 1980s. He also attended Middle East Technical University as part of his education. After his studies, Karzai got involved in Afghan politics during a very turbulent time for his country.
During the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989), Karzai moved to Pakistan and worked as a fundraiser for the Afghan mujahideen resistance. He became more politically active in the 1990s, briefly serving as Deputy Foreign Minister in the Islamic State of Afghanistan government. His life changed significantly in July 1999 when his father was killed, prompting him to lead the Popalzai tribe, which increased his status among Afghanistan's tribal and political leaders.
The September 11, 2001 attacks and the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001 gave Karzai a chance to be a central figure in his country's political changes. He led Pashtun tribes in the Kandahar region against the Taliban, becoming a key player in the group that overthrew them. His role during this time led to him being chosen as chairman of the Afghan Interim Administration at the December 2001 International Conference on Afghanistan in Germany.
Karzai's political rise continued when he was picked as interim president during the 2002 loya jirga (grand assembly) in Kabul for a two-year period. After Afghanistan's first democratic presidential election in 2004, he won and became the first president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. He won a second five-year term in the disputed 2009 presidential election, serving until September 2014 when Ashraf Ghani succeeded him. Throughout his presidency, Karzai worked to build relationships between Afghanistan's various ethnic communities while handling complicated relationships with international partners, especially NATO and the United States, though these ties became increasingly tense in his later years in office.
Before Fame
Karzai was born into the well-known Popalzai Pashtun tribe, and his early life was influenced by Afghanistan's tribal traditions and the political upheavals beginning in the late 1970s. He studied in Kabul, and later in India, completing his education during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Living abroad at this important time gave him a global view while keeping him connected to Afghan resistance movements.
His father's assassination in 1999 was a pivotal moment that pushed Karzai into a leadership role within his tribe and into the wider political scene. With a background as both a well-educated modern figure and a traditional tribal leader, he was in a unique position to navigate the complicated political scene that came about after the Taliban's rise and the subsequent U.S.-led forces' overthrow.
