Biography
Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev was born on December 24, 1961, in Baku, then part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. He is the son of Heydar Aliyev, a significant Soviet and later Azerbaijani political figure, and grew up in the political elite. He completed his secondary education at Baku city secondary school number 6 and then went on to study international relations and diplomacy at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
Aliyev rose to power through a carefully planned succession after his father's health began to decline. In August 2003, he was appointed Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, holding the position for two months before winning the presidential election in October 2003. This election faced heavy criticism from international observers due to irregularities and lack of genuine competition. He became president on October 31, 2003, shortly before his father's death, starting a political family rule that continues today.
Since taking office, Aliyev has led Azerbaijan through significant economic growth fueled mainly by the country's large oil and natural gas reserves. This wealth has enabled major infrastructure projects and increased Azerbaijan's international presence. However, critics say these resources have mainly benefited the ruling elite rather than the wider population. His government has hosted numerous major international events and has been active in foreign policy, especially in energy diplomacy.
Aliyev's rule has seen the strengthening of authoritarian control. A 2009 constitutional referendum removed presidential term limits, allowing him to stay in power indefinitely. He has been re-elected in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2024, though these elections have repeatedly faced criticism from international observers for not being free or fair. His administration is known for limiting civil society, media freedom, and political opposition, with many human rights organizations reporting systematic violations.
The president is married to Mehriban Alieva, who is the Vice President of Azerbaijan, making her the first woman in this role in the country's history. Their family has gained significant wealth through state-linked enterprises and major Azerbaijani industries like banking, construction, telecommunications, and energy. International investigations have connected the Aliyev family to money-laundering and corruption networks across Europe.
Before Fame
Growing up as the son of Heydar Aliyev, a high-ranking Soviet official who later became Azerbaijan's president, Ilham Aliyev was around political power from an early age. His education at top schools, including the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, set him up for a career in diplomacy and international affairs. Before getting into politics directly, he worked in various businesses and gradually got involved in his father's political activities.
His rise to prominence was largely influenced by his father's political path and Azerbaijan's shift from Soviet rule to independence in 1991. As Heydar Aliyev gained power in the newly independent Azerbaijan during the 1990s, the younger Aliyev was seen as a potential successor, benefiting from both family connections and the political instability that marked post-Soviet Azerbaijan's early years.
