Biography

Arwa al-Sulayhi was a Yemeni queen who ruled from 1067 until she passed away in 1138, making her one of the longest-serving female monarchs in Islamic history. Born around 1048 in Jibla, she was the last ruler of the Sulayhid Dynasty and was the first woman to be given the title of Hujjah in Ismaili Shia Islam, marking her as the closest living representation of God's will according to their beliefs. Her political career evolved over time, starting with her marriage to al-Mukarram Ahmad in 1065. At first, she didn't have any clear political power, but after her mother-in-law Asma died in 1074, Ahmad started giving her more authority. By 1086, after Ahmad died, Arwa had become the sole ruler, holding both political and religious power herself. As a female ruler, Arwa was rare in the Islamic world. Along with Asma bint Shihab, she was one of only two female monarchs in the Muslim Arab world to have the khutbah, a type of sermon, proclaimed in her name in mosques, showing the highest level of Muslim monarchial status. This was a clear sign of her unique role as both a political and religious leader. Her reign included important architectural and religious contributions, with several mosques being built, most notably the Queen Arwa Mosque. She is remembered by various honorific titles like As-Sayyidah Al-Hurrah (The Noble Lady), Al-Malikah Al-Hurrah (The Noble Queen), and Malikat Saba As-Saghirah (Little Queen of Sheba), showing her respected place in Yemeni society and Islamic history.

Before Fame

Arwa was born into the politically influential Sulayhid family around 1048 in Jibla, Yemen, when the Sulayhid Dynasty controlled large parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The Sulayhi rulers followed Ismaili Shia Islam and had strong ties with the Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt, which gave them religious legitimacy and political backing. Arwa's rise began when she married al-Mukarram Ahmad in 1065, which brought her into the royal family but without any real political power. Her chance to take on more significant roles in governance came after 1074 when her mother-in-law Asma, a strong political leader, passed away.
